Guide

**Note** If you’ve read my Snorlax build, you should have an easier time understanding how I’m playing this build.

Among the game’s Defenders, Mamoswine is probably the closest to an All-Arounder after Blastoise. It has a lot of traits and abilities reminiscent of other pokemon, but finds unique ways to make them its own. Mamoswine is definitely not an easy pokemon to pick up and use, so be sure to get a lot of time practicing its mechanics—particularly with this build. Also, Mamoswine is a late-game pokemon, much like Gardevior and Garchomp, so don’t expect an immediate early game.

Start the game off by entering your lane and leveling yourself up as soon as possible. Unlike Raltz and Gibble, Swinub can definitely “play” a bit more early game. At level 6, you should evolve into Piloswine and unlock Ice Fang, a hard but rewarding move. What you’ll want to do in engagements is lead with Tackle to displace enemies and then use Ice Fang to grapple a stunned enemy and throw them. If you’ve read my Snorlax guide, think of Ice Fang as you would Block: you could Ice Fang a target and throw them away from you/your goal OR you can them into your allies attacks. The versitility of this move is amazing and can grab any target who isn’t “Unstoppable”. Most importantly, however, thrown targets will get frozen on impact and, if you throw them into an enemy, will also freeze that enemy. This can be an amazing shutdown move or grapple to save an ally or stop a score.

When you reach level 10, you’ll evolve into Mamoswine and unlock Earthquake — this move is just like Snorlax’s Heavy Slam and replaces Tackle as your engagement opener. At higher levels, Earthquake — which can already pull in enemies — will also slow them, making them easier to grapple with Ice Fang. And because of Thick Fat (its ability) freezing targets in your goal zone will slow down enemy scoring meters.

The items (currently) are meant to maximize Swinub/Piloswine’s survivability, in addition to Mamoswine’s late-game command grab and brawling potential. (I may change out Weakness Policy for a more defensive option with more testing.) In my opinion, this build is more position-based and heavily focused on spatial-awareness, as opposed to the user friendly HHP-Crash build. It’ll certainly take a lot of practice to properly use Ice Fang (mostly because of its poor range), but it’ll be incredibly satisfying when performed correctly.

Works Well With

Alolan Ninetales

Of course, Ninetales is a great option for Mamoswine as they both rely heavily of their freezing capabilities. More could be done with Ninetales while running a different build, but you could just as easily benefit from grappling frozen targets.

Blissey

Blissey will not increase your survivability with heals, but will also increase your potency in brawls and teamfights. If you can keep Blissey safe, it can keep your in the fight.

Garchomp

Garchomp is any brawler’s friend and Mamoswine is certainly a brawler. While they’d be abyssmal together early game (and thus should not occupy the same lane), they can be a killer combo in teamfights and late game even at their misdle evolutions.
