Build Path
Power Whip
Damage. Slow. Displacement.
Right as RainUNITE
Heal. Boosted Atk
Buddy Barrier
When using a Unite Move, shield yourself and your nearby ally with the lowest HP.
Slick Spoon
Damage dealt by Sp. Atk attacks ignore 10% of opponent's Sp. Def.
Focus Band
When HP is low, gradually recovers HP.
X Speed
Temporarily increases your Movement Speed.
Stat Boosts
Shield (Upon Unite)
Sp. Def Attack

The build is optimized for coordinated 5-stacks, where stacking items are both difficult and risky to use. So, while you could use stacking items instead, I find it best to use items like these.
Substitutions for items might include the following:
EXP Share
Aeos Cookie
Resonant Guard
Sp. Atk Specs
The other moveset options will all work well with any of these items, although I can't say I have any experience with Dragon Pulse, as Muddy Water has always been the better move.
The battle item is debatable, but X Speed is arguably the best option here for move synergy.
The emblem build below shows some colors that are not the same in-game, so just ignore them and trust me.
